| Apparently I'm ignorant. |
I don't normally post about things like this but today this really irked me in a big way and I'm a little upset about it. In our county newspaper we have little columns for each small town who has a contributing writer. I happen to be the columnist for my town, which I enjoy and have been doing for almost a 10 months now. It only pay 25 cents per inch of print, and it's nothing glamorous but it makes me feel like an adult. Anyways, I like to start my column out with something personal or an observation that's not necessarily news worthy, but it's nice to mention. So, my column was in the paper today and I get a call from a guy at the Newspaper Office saying this guy called to talk to me about my column and would I call him back since he can't give out my personal information and he explained that we work from home and not at the office. So I call the guy and he tells me that I put in my opening column something that was wrong. I put in that "if you have driven through town this past weekend after dark, you'll have noticed our town Christmas Lights are now lit up." or something to that effect. So basically he wanted to let me know that "After Dark" is "Daylight" and that it's something people say that's not grammatically correct and it sounds ignorant. This pissed me off so I told the guy that he could call the Editor and complain because I'm not putting a retraction/clarification/correction to something that is sometimes reworded because the newspaper didn't have enough space for all of my column in one edition, or because it was too wordy or whatever. It just really made me mad that he had to use the word ignorant. Yes, I know I'm "just a housewife" to some and that people think that SAHM are lazy, uneducated, etc. because we have the luxuary of not showering and staying in last nights p.j.'s because we couldn't squeeze in a bath while our kids watched the Doodlebops and our braincells are slowly dying because we have the theme to Blue's Clues stuck in there for days at a time. I was once an English major. I was a good student, and I'm fairly current and can debate and discuss lots of subjects from best diaper brands to my answer to World Peace (exaggeration..) but geez. I do get his point. I won't say that I think he's wrong, although I don't think he needed to be all arrogant in pointing it out. My point is that there's no need to call someone ignorant. I feel like the Shrek Donkey... I need a hug. lol. |
